The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Shares He Has an Idea of How Pluribus Might Finish... Currently.
Vince Gilligan never anticipated that his new science-fiction series would turn into a cultural phenomenon. “The viewers have been incredible,” he remarks. “I did not foresee the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
Now that Season 1 of the acclaimed series wrapping up—and a second season greenlit and underway—the writers' room opened up about the audience reaction and whether it will shape the narrative path of Pluribus.
About the Incredible Viewer Reception
Anyone might to get swayed by the widespread acclaim and online debates surrounding Pluribus. He is doing his best to avoid both.
“The experience is akin to an endless supply of something incredibly sweet and being tickled to death,” he explains. “It's amazing, but I hear about it from others, and that's on purpose. Not once have I looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever want to. It's quite the opposite. It's a rabbit hole I know I would disappear down and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from the hardware store and I'd never leave my living room.”
Despite his concerted efforts, there’s it's impossible to ignore the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“It is not our goal to tailor anything,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not influenced by online forums.”
“It's wiser to keep our heads down and working,” he chimes in.
A Pressing Query: Has Vince Gilligan See the Finale of Pluribus?
Given that Gilligan and his team aren't taking cues by audience theories, does that mean they already know how Pluribus will ultimately end? The answer is yes… sort of.
“There are some compelling concepts about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan says. “yet we stand ready to abandon a good idea for a more brilliant plan. This approach has served us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we find a more perfect path and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
Then again, if plans fall through, Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to use as a backup.
“My recurring proposal is that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and the characters are inside it,” Smith jokes, “but no one is buying it.”
Alternatively, why not reference the legendary finales?
“I want Carol to wake up in bed beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
