The British tennis star earned the biggest success of his professional journey by coming back from a early deficit to beat top-ranked player Carlos Alcaraz in three hard-fought sets in the second round of the prestigious indoor tournament.

Although he had before beaten Alcaraz on two separate matches, this triumph represents Norrie's initial victory over a reigning world No 1.

"Massive. So big for me," commented Norrie, who is now the fifth British man in the record books to defeat a world No 1. "Bouncing back from injury last year, I was defeated in the initial match of qualies here. I just tried to enjoy my tennis in the latter part of the year. To get a triumph like this, it's the biggest success of my tennis journey, my first win over the top player and arguably the most confident player in the sport right now."

Norrie, ranked No 31, also halted Alcaraz's supreme streak of nine straight final appearances and 17 consecutive premier event wins, which represented the finest stretch of results in the Spaniard's young career.

Match Breakdown

The top seed seemed to be progressing easily towards victory early on as he sailed through the opening set. Yet, Norrie slowly battled back into the match by executing with improved accuracy and engaging the Spanish opponent into prolonged, grueling rallies. His relentless steadiness and reliability slowly made an impact.

During large parts of the contest, Alcaraz performed well on serve but he found it challenging to get his timing right on his baseline shots. The 22-year-old seemed especially uncomfortable striking his signature shot, which has been the best shot in the game for a large part of this year, producing 29 forehand unforced errors and a overall of 54 mistakes. Opposing him, the British player gave his opponent very few errors, keeping up his consistency, athleticism and depth the entire contest while delivering effective serves and selecting opportunities to advance forward and play aggressively.
