The city's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to make his home in the traditional Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the affordable apartment that became a focal point during his election bid.

An Iconic Home

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the primary dwelling for the majority of New York City mayors from the post-war period.

However, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a central platform, hesitated to declare he would live there immediately following his electoral win in November.

"My choice was based on keeping my family safe and the imperative to dedicating all of my focus on carrying out the affordability agenda New Yorkers elected me on," Mamdani said in a statement.

A Fond Farewell

His home was in Astoria, Queens, an area known for its abundance of immigrant populations and global cuisine.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: my gratitude for demonstrating what is great about New York City," he noted.

"While I may no longer live in Astoria, the community will forever remain a part of me and my work," he added.

Political Debate

During his election campaign, Mamdani connected his key pledge – halting rent increases – to his own housing situation.

However his rivals, most notably ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for occupying the apartment although he is from a famous family.

A House Not Always Used

Some mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, preferred to remain in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side throughout his time in office, which wrapped up in 2012.

Instead, Bloomberg argued it ought to be a space for public city functions, and championed an extensive renovation of the older mansion.

A Grand New Home

When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion sometime around his first day on 1 January, he will find himself in a setting far removed from his modest Astoria home.

Adorned in cream-colored walls, forest green window covers, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house with views of the East River.

Internally, the ground floor of the classically designed mansion is appointed to reflect the home's original era.

The property, which reportedly has several bedrooms, also has increased security measures to secure the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

Past occupants have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of former mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that they experienced doors opening and closed by themselves, and the floors emitted odd sounds.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "I don't care the skeptics say," he insisted in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."

Affordable Housing Lifeline

His former home is rent stabilised, meaning the city sets limits on how much building managers can hike the monthly cost each year.

City residents consider these apartments crucial resources as the cost of housing exceeds the means of many residents.

Data indicated Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to real estate analysts Zillow, the average rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
