Ethiopia Receives Valuable Artefacts Following a Long Residence in Germany
Around 12 historical artefacts were ceremoniously given back to Ethiopia following staying by a household from Germany for more than ten decades.
The items, initially acquired in the 1920's by the German then-envoy to the Ethiopian empire a German envoy and his wife his partner, were transferred on this past Wednesday to the Institute of Ethiopian Studies at Addis Ababa University.
The collection contained crowns, protective shields and artistic works, all considered as culturally significant in Ethiopia.
"These items still stand as a symbol of the lasting and positive relationship between Germany and Ethiopia," remarked Germany's envoy, the ambassador to the East African country.
Professor a professor, whose father was delivered during the family's diplomatic posting in the nation, delivered the items at a event joined by the Minister of Tourism the tourism official.
He stated that the household's intention to give back the artefacts was to "display their splendor with the public and maintain the heritage and history tied to my father's origin."
The items were either considered donations or purchases, according to the household.
"We want to thank Professor Weiss's household for actively expressing their deep appreciation for Ethiopia by carefully preserving these items and vitally securing their repatriation to their legitimate nation," commented the tourism minister.
She noted that the items would soon be available to the people for research and academic study, calling the action a milestone in preserving Ethiopia's cultural heritage.
"Efforts persist to bring back old items that are held in the hands of collectors and organizations throughout the globe," she stated.
During colonial rule in Africa, many of historical artefacts were looted.
This demand by nations in Africa for the return of stolen objects has been responded to by certain positive outcomes in recent years - even if several items are merely on short-term display.
Back in 2022, the German government was the pioneering country to repatriate a selection of the renowned Benin artifacts to Nigeria in an attempt to confront its "complex colonial history."
