Both Deceased Students Revealed in the Ivy League School Incident as Police Persist in Search for Killer.
The pair of scholars who died in the weekend's mass shooting in Providence had tributes paid to them on Monday – while an intensive search for their shooter continued following the discharge by authorities in Rhode Island of the sole person detained in connection in the case.
Honoring a Lost Student
Ella Cook, a sophomore from Alabama, was remembered as “an incredible, grounded, faithful, bright light”, per the Advent Cathedral in Birmingham, which honored her memory at a gathering on Sunday.
She served as vice-president of Brown’s chapter of College Republicans of America, as the club stated. The White House press secretary also posted sympathies on social media, remarking: “It's indescribable. Remembering her loved ones and companions, particularly her mother and father.”
An International Student
The other deceased individual was an Uzbek national named MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, from Uzbekistan in his initial year at the prestigious university, his family confirmed.
His name was officially acknowledged by the Uzbek Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“He was exceptionally gentle, witty, and bright. He harbored grand aspirations of pursuing a career in neurosurgery and assisting patients,” Samira Umurzokova, his sister said in a tribute.
The Shooting Incident
An additional nine individuals were hurt in the weekend shooting in the engineering department of Brown’s university in Providence, during the school’s final exam period.
Law enforcement reported on Sunday evening that a 24-year-man arrested in a police operation at a lodging about around 27 kilometers from the university earlier in the day was released from custody.
“A perpetrator remains free,” declared Peter Neronha, Peter Neronha.
Neronha explained, “Sometimes you head in one direction, and then you must reassess and pursue a different angle, and that’s exactly what has happened over the last day or so.”
Public Fear
The city's mayor, Brett Smiley, admitted: “It is expected to provoke renewed concern for our city”.
The shooter discharged a weapon inside a lecture hall in the engineering building on Saturday, shooting over four dozen bullets from a handgun, a police source reported to the news agency.
Officers that entered the lodging recovered a pair of pistols and magazines when the suspect was taken into custody, according to reports.
Condition of the Injured
Of the nine hurt, one pupil was discharged from care, said Brown’s president, Christina Paxson. Seven more were in grave but unchanging health, and one was in critical condition, police said on Sunday.
A private school, a private K-12 school in the city of Durham, said Kendall Turner, Kendall Turner, was among those critically wounded.
Additional Memorials
Cook was honored at a church service in Birmingham on Sunday. A clergyman said, “Her presence was a wonderful, steady, pious glow not only in her youth... but at the university she was a shining example in that specific location as well.”
A group leader, Martin Bertao, shared a message from the club. “Ella was recognized for her fearless, heroic, and gentle spirit as she worked for her branch and other students,” he said.
The US ambassador, Jonathan Henick, said he was “profoundly grieved” by Umurzokov’s death in a message. “We extend our sincere condolences to Mr Umurzokov’s family, companions, and schoolmates and mourn the loss of his potential.”
