Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and near the frontier with Belarus.

No fewer than 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and participants so that these practices become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
These airspace violations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Recent incidents in nearby states have led European authorities to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
